Arco da Rua Augusta
The Arch presents three parts, being the central one the highest and the most important due to the iconographical importance it carries. The side facing Augusta Street shows a big clock, decorated with vegetarian themes, and the side facing Tagus River shows the royal Portuguese coat of arms raised and surrounded by palm leaves, as well as four statues, two at each side, representing Nuno Ávares Pereira, Marchis of Pombal, ( on the right), Viriato and Vasco da Gama ( on the left). Behind these statues of major men of Portuguese history we can see two other people representing the river Douro ( right) and the river Tagus (left).
At the top of the Arch there is a group of sculptures that represent the Glory crowning the Talent and the Courage. below there is an ironed Latin inscription. This Arch has been designed as National Monument since 1910.
Basílica da Estrela
Basilica da Estrela is dedicated to Jesus Heart and was built by the order of Queen Mary I. It was built between 1779 and 1790 with the intervention of the architects Mateus Vicente and Reinaldo Manuel. All the statues are Machado de Castro's work. The magnificent building of great harmony, built in a neoclassical style, has a facade of three parts decorated with fine statues. On four composite columns stand four statues representing Faith, Adoration, Freedom and Gratitude.
The interior of the temple is of pink, black and white marble and has a three branch nave closed by six transversal chapels each with a painted altar panel. This is one of the finest monuments to be appreciated due to its wonderful architecture.
